A Few of My Favorite Things

Trails through forests

and footsteps on needles

Bright colored foliage and

ladybird beetles

Small, black chickadees

ready to sing

These are a few of my favorite things.

Blank empty notebooks

and bright colored inkjoys,

Stickers and pencils and

writing with no noise

Capturing words from my mind as they spring,

These are a few of my favorite things.

Friends in fall jackets

by bonfire flames

Family that plays many

nightly board games

Meetings at Book Club,

Many Girls’ Night Out flings,

These are a few of my favorite things.

When the tech breaks,

When the stress builds,

When I’m feeling sad

I simply remember my favorite things

and then I don’t feel so bad.

So I was in my Time to Write Workshop, when a writer mentioned “favorite things”. Well, as soon as that was said, the song from the Sound of Music popped into my head- “My Favorite Things”. I could picture Julie Andrews with the children gathered around her offering comfort during the thunderstorm. My head starting popping to the beat as the melody ran through my mind. So, I decided to go with it and try to fit my favorite things into the rhythm of the song. It was fun word play to get it to fit as closely as I could.

I would love to know some of your favorite things, if you would like to leave them in the comments.

  1. Some of my favourite things is reading a clever and creative Slice, such as yours! I love the flow, rhythm and movement in the text – I silently hummed along to the tune. I also enjoy how you highlighted each stanza in a different colour. It made for easy reading the colours added joy.

  2. I found you! I used this song/poem from Sound of Music when I talked to students about creating list poems. Yours is lovely! You put a lot of effort into this post with rhyme and colors. Loved “Capturing words from my mind as they spring” and so much more! So very glad I visited today!

  3. Oh my gosh I love this! I love that I can sing it to the tune of the song as well. One of my favorite things to do as a kid was to “remix” songs with new lyrics. This was awesome!

  4. Such a lovely poem that describes so many of your favourite things. I have so many, these are just a few; cat’s whiskers, baby chatter, aussie parrots, galloping horses, art galleries, fruit orchards….
