Oh, what a fabulous Saturday night! I felt like I was in a time warp taking me back to my high school days. A group of us went to see an 80s cover band- M80s- at a local distillery.
I dressed in a neon pink shirt that matched the scrunchie on top on my head. I scrunched my hair to give it the 80’s permed look. The finishing touch was neon dangly earrings. One of my friends wore a Just Relax t-shirt and another had on pom-pom socks.
As the first three chords played, all of use immediately recognized the Duran Duran song. The entire crowd began singing at the first word and kept it up throughout the remainder of the song. We were all dancing shoulder to shoulder. We joked about how hot it was in the room and was it just a hot flash or truly hot in there- now that was totally different than dancing in the real 80s. On huge screens next to the band, the music videos played for each song. It was like the launch of MTV all over again! Hit after hit played spanning diverse groups-Air Supply, Poison, Van Halen, A-ha, Def Leppard, Devo and many more. “Whip it! I said whip it good!” ( I bet you sang that line.}
For 3 continuous hours, I danced and sang (shouted). It was pure fun! I don’t remember the last time I did anything like this. I felt so energized. The music resurrected my almost 20 year old self. It was wonderful to return to these moments of my life, if only for a bit of one night. “Oh these were the best days of my life…” (Summer of ’69 by Bryan Adams)
