As I pulled into my driveway, I noticed a package sitting on my front porch. After parking in the garage, I walked up the walkway and saw that smile on the brown box. “Huh Amazon, I wonder what it is?” I hadn’t ordered anything. The next logical thought was that my husband did. Picking up the package, I noticed that it was addressed to me.
I brought it inside and opened it right away.
Inside was a beautiful gift from a friend. It was the book “The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady.” Here is a small blurb about the book:
“Every single page of Edith Holden’s The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady is a celebration of beauty. Richly illustrated and hand lettered, this 1906 journal was never intended for publication, but rather to record Holden’s thoughts and observations as she watched the seasons come to pass in the English countryside. Her mastery shines in this deceptively simple yet elegant look at the birds, plants, and insects of her local environs, along with favorite poems and her own notes.”

It is a nature journal from 1906! (reprinted of course). The illustrations are stunning and having the observations in her handwriting just adds the touch of knowing you are reading her personal thoughts about nature at the moment in time.

For those who know me, you will know what a treat this is for me. For those who don’t know me, I LOVE being out in nature and capturing my outings in my nature journal. I am currently taking a class to become a Nature Journal Educator. In January, I completed a challenge about nature journaling each day. My friend saw this book and said she immediately wanted me to have it. I know that I will learn from this and enhance my nature journaling skills from carefully examining each and every page.
I am giddy. This was so unexpected. I didn’t know what was going to be in the Amazon box but I never thought of this. I am so grateful for my friend and her thoughtfulness.
Off to read through my new book….. 🙂

What a GORGEOUS book! The drawings, the detailed writing…the whole thing smells of adventure. As someone who would routinely just wander out in nature as a kid (and not often enough as a grown-up), I can appreciate all that went into this beautifully-crafted volume. Enjoy!
