Moving-my
fueling muse.
This monthly challenge has allowed me to discover something about my writing self. Exercise or moving gets my creative juices flowing when I feel uninspired, stuck, or just blah.
Earlier this week, I had no idea what to write about. The sunshine and blue sky were calling so I decided to write later and get outside. I walked my block embracing the sun on my face, the birds chirping and my fellow neighbors strolling by. I wasn’t even thinking about writing in my conscious brain. Then as my final steps approached my door- POP!- an idea is jumping around in my brain. It led to writing a quick 6 word story post with a twist of humor. These words were not there before.
Then this morning, I wanted to write before heading out with a friend for some afternoon fun. My brain held nothing. I also wanted to ride my exercise bike for 20 minutes so I decided to do that first. While riding, I was singing along to songs from the 80s, pedaling to the beat and not focusing on today’s Slice topic. At a pause in the music, the thought emerged that I should write about how moving rises my creativity. The DING!- write a Tricube poem about it. So as soon as my time on the bike was over, I sat down and composed this.
So now I know a way to get “unstuck”- plus it adds to my exercise goal for each day. I am curious to know what helps you get inspired on those days when words won’t flow. Leave your ways in the comments so I can build a list of things to try. I will definitely need more than just one way to move my mind.

It was fun to read your beginning with the different colors. Thank you for giving me a new way to consider getting ideas when I’m stuck!

Movement can do wonders to support creativity. Cool that a poem grew from riding an exercise bike.

Walking definitely gets my creative juices flowing. My co-teacher and I come up with the best lesson ideas when we take a few laps around the building. Sitting outside and observing the world around me also give me ideas. I love haiku poems, so I feel as though they start rattling around in my brain. I love your tricube.

Thank you. No there is an idea I haven’t tried- walking before lesson planning. I will give it a try

Interesting to think about when it comes to students and helping them with their inner muse. For me, a shower is a place for ideas, as well as those moments in bed before placing the feet on the floor. Your inspiration strategies would fit better into the classroom!

I am with you! I had these experiences as well. If I get straight to the computer to write my blog first thing in the morning, often nothing comes. I need to live, move, walk, take a shower before ideas will germinate. Actually, the shower is one of the ways that I can get ideas.

I have recently started to use movement throughout the day to get myself unstuck connected to work. If I can’t get myself going on a project, I take a quick walk or cue up a short exercise or yoga video. It helps so much! I will definitely have to try that as a spark for writing slices too!

I will have to add yoga to my movement choices.
