Distance Disbelief- SOLC Day 14

5 miles…. WHAT????

I really didn’t believe that I just walked 5 miles. I met a friend at 4:00 for a walk on this sunny 60 degree day. We started walking the path along the Erie Canal enjoying the blue sky, sunshine, warm breeze and the feelings of Spring. My friend and I chatted about our lives over the past week. We laughed at stories of snafus we both encountered. As we kept walking, we shared smiles and hellos with other eager to be outside walkers and stopped to pet a few dogs. Then our talk turned to the political issues of the current days. We let frustration out through a quickened pace and true feelings expressed in our safe place. We reached a canal bridge and decided to turn around. Our conversation continued the whole way back. Finally, stopping to take a quick photo together before heading to our cars.

When I looked at the clock, it said 5:45. We walked for 1 hour and 45 minutes- that seemed impossible! In my mind, it seemed more like 30 minutes. I got in many more steps than I thought for the day.

A great walk with a friend made 5 miles just happen.

  1. I love when that happens. I often talk on the phone to long distance friends, often both of us walking at the same time. We talk about life and politics, the time goes by, and the steps add up. It’s healthy in many ways. Cheers on your 5 miles.

  2. What you described are my favorite kinds of walks – good company, pleasant surroundings, and sharing what’s going on in our lives.

I have a good friend who recently lost her 10 year old dog to an accident. She is struggling to go for walks because she used to do that with Genny. So we made a plan to walk together soon. She said this will give her motivation to continue to walk, so she can keep up with me when we go. I’m going to make sure this happens. Thank you for sharing.
