Who Would You Invite to Dinner?-SOLC Day 7

So who’s coming to dinner?

A class of 2nd graders at my school after completing a biography unit posted in the hall a guest they would like to invite to dinner and the reasons why. The invitee could be living or deceased.

As I read their work in the hall today, it made me ponder who I would invite to join me. So here is a quick list of 5 people that I would extend an invitation to (I didn’t include family members who have passed on because that would fill my 5 easily):

  1. Abraham Lincoln- Not sure why but for my whole life I have been drawn to learning and reading about this man. I did projects about him in elementary school and then again in high school. If I am scrolling through the guide on my TV and there is a documentary about him, I feel a pull to watch. I have visited Ford’s Theater and the museum there. If I could invite him, it would be interesting to talk directly with him and not learn about him through other people’s perspectives and words.
  2. Georgia O’Keefe- I love nature and spend many hours nature journaling. I would love to chat with her about her creative process, her observations of our natural world and her overall career as an artist.
  3. Jane Austen- Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books and who wouldn’t want to chat with one of their favorite authors. It would be interesting to see how she reacts to the popularity of her books now. Some say that she held radical views about women for her time and it would be quite a conversation to be a part of discussing how that impacted her and how it felt to let her voice be heard.
  4. Amanda Gorman- I saw her speak and read her poetry. I was mesmerized for the entire program. Having some one-on-one time with her to discuss her writing process, creativity, and ways of approaching life would be fantastic. I learned so much from her at that lecture and know that she could teach me so much more.
  5. Josh Allen- I know, total different guest than the others, but I grew up in Buffalo, NY and cheer on the Bills till this day. I admire his character and leadership qualities. It would just be great to meet him and talk about all he has done beyond football for the Buffalo community.

I would love to know who you would invite to sit around a table share a meal with you.

  1. That project sounds like a neat way to wrap up a unit. Now you have me thinking about who I would invite. I’ve always been curious about Elizabeth Blackwell and her struggles to become a doctor. She might be one. I think Michelle Obama might be another – so many questions I have about her experiences. I need to read her book. I’m stumped right now for more, but I’ll keep thinking. Thanks for sharing.

  2. What a great culminating activity! I bet it was fun reading their responses. And what a question. Definitely something to ponder!

  3. What a fun question to ponder, and how fun to read about your choices! From what I’ve heard, my impression of Abraham Lincoln is that he was quite charismatic. I’d bet he would be a fun dinner guest! I’m with you on Amanda Gorman and Jane Austen, too. I might choose Amy Krause Rosenthal, author of Dictionary of an Ordinary Life (among other books). Her writing gives the impression that she had a fun, quirky sense of humor.
