Old-Fashioned Mail Joy

Joy

over a

bright green envelope

piled in daily mail

addressed in tipsy cursive letters

indicating it is more than junk

recognizing the black loops, slants and dots

as a dear old friend’s identifiable, treasured scrawl

ripping open the envelope to eagerly read life’s news

Going to the mailbox yesterday, I had this small gift of a joy. An unexpected message from a friend mixed in with the rest of the junk mail. The bright green envelope caught my attention and when I recognized her handwriting, a smile dawned. I couldn’t wait to read her message and catch up on her life. I dropped the rest of the mail on the counter and dove right in.

It hit me that I never get this excited from an email. It just hasn’t happened for me. I still treasure the handwritten cards and messages that are so rare these days. I will take this joy of snail mail.

  1. It is SO RARE that we get letters or even cards these days. I find thank you notes an invitations are the closest I get to a personal note…sigh…
