Row!!
Legs push forcefully,
Body hinges back,
Arms pull,
Paddle drives through the water,
Feather the oar,
Body slides forward slowly,
Recover the energy,
Row!!
and Row!!
and Row!!
and Row!!
This past week I was able to row for the first time on the water in a boat of 8. It was absolutely lovely gliding through the water in rhythmic meditation. The slides of the seats, clicks of the oars, whoosh of the water all in time let my mind settle and just fall into this repetitive motion. Gliding together over the water brought personal peace.
Over the winter, I decided to try something totally new to me and I enrolled in a Learn to Row class. I learned the technique while using an erg (rowing machine). The erg definitely helped me learn the method as well as increased my aerobic stamina. But honestly, it was not my favorite thing. The motivation to go to class each week was to make it out onto the water in May.
Well, this week was it! All the hard work of winter brought pure joy of Spring. I am so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone because I have found a true new delight. Can’t wait for my next row!
A HUGE thank you goes out to the coaches and supportive community at RBC (Rochester Boat Club). All of you made this possible for me. So thank you.

You give such a wonderful image, through your poetry and prose, you make me envious of the meditative, yet demanding, experience!

Beautiful photo, beautiful poem, and beautiful reflection! You have found a wonderful new pastime, I think. How great to be on the water, exercising alongside others. I love the line “feather the oar” so much.
