Transformative Transportation

Kicking my leg over my seat,

Placing my foot on the pedal,

Pushing off,

Pedaling away,

Rolling down the street…

cool morning air freshens my lungs,

sunbeams illuminate the flowering dogwood trees,

lilac perfume wafts on the breeze,

dogs bark “Good Morning”,

Pulling into my school’s driveway,

Parking my bike,

Locking it on the rack,

Thanking the world for the gifts of this beautiful morn,

Sharing this positivity throughout my day.

With much anticipation, I awaited Monday morning. I was going to start riding my bike to school again. Spring is here. It is not a long ride, about 10 minutes, and it is an easy way to add exercise into my day. But it adds many other moments of joy to my day as I pedal in both directions.

I’ve realized that these bike rides positively impact my beginning of the school day as well as my arrival home. I feel filled with freedom and openness. This is so different than the short car ride that makes me feel like I am racing to get there or back which builds stress, not releases it. My bike rides are definitely transformative transportation.

  1. i love how you crafteed this slice – a little bit of poetry. A little bit of reflective prose. I also like the font color choices. And the last line/title alliteration!! You make me want to ride a bike to work!!

  2. Well, Sally really noticed a lot! I echo her comments.
I was fortunate enough to be able to walk to work, and in all weather. (I gave up a parking space, as there weren’t enough, so I had to walk.) And I so agree with you-its gives you time to meditate, transition, arrive calm. How come that efficient car ride creates anxiety instead? You tell us- we need the breeze, the weather, the sights, the physical work.

  3. I love your post and the feeling of freedom and happiness from riding your bike. But I must ask- where do you put all your stuff? I always lug my lunch box, my big purse and usually a work bag or two.
