Ode to Maple Trees

Oh, powerful leader among trees

standing proudly across the Northeast

gathered in a forest nation

you awe us with your beauty and strength.

Oh, powerful leader among trees

your sap becomes liquid sweetness

that feeds and heals our bodies

with antioxidants and micronutrients.

Oh, powerful leader among trees

your leaves of green shelter us from sun

and provide a gorgeous color show

in the yearly cycle of slowly dying and falling away.

Oh, powerful leader among trees

you are held in high honor

in gratitude for all you provide for our survival

May you grow and thrive for centuries on end.

It is maple syruping time here in New York. It is a signal that Spring is near as the sap begins to flow in the maple trees. Last weekend, I went to a pancake breakfast with pure maple syrup to celebrate this time of year. The sweet syrup made the pancakes so delicious. A few days ago, I attend a presentation by Robin Wall Kimmerer. She talked about proudly being a member of Maple Nation. In combination, both of these items made me pause and think about those maple trees that I walk beside each day. I just wanted to offer a thank you up to them.

  1. I love your ode to trees, especially the repeated line. I have never thought of writing an ode to something in nature. It would be interesting to really dive into a particular piece of nature and show gratitude.
