My World Went Monochrome

Waking up this morning and glancing out the window, my world went monochrome overnight.

Last evening, my world had color- green sprouts poking through, early Spring flowers blooming. But this morning only black, white and gray fill my vision.

Just like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, I stepped from beautiful Technicolor into black and white. I, however, have remained in the same location of Upstate New York,

Just like Dorothy, at the end of the movie, found the beauty of home, I am in awe of the beauty in this monochrome morning. This has inspired me to write from the prompt, Outside the Window, to try and capture my view.

Outside the Window

My world has turned

to black and white

as many inches of snow

silently covered all surroundings

during my slumber.

Small white flakes stream

from the light gray cloud blanket above

collecting atop of earlier adventurerers

adding flake by flake to our inches of accumulation.

The evergreen boughs

bend without breaking under the white-weighted heaviness

reaching downwards searching for support from underneath.

The leafless branches of trees

reach ever upward frosted in a coating of winter white

bright against their darkened bark.

The first peeps of Spring color in yellow blooms

no longer seem to exist

as they have been endangered by the overlay of this passing season.

The hard frozen ground

is now an inviting quilt of eiderdown

calling you out to experience

the comfort and calm of this morning’s beauty.

  1. I love the opposite/juxtaposition of Wizard of Oz. Also how you utilize color and references in the poetry is also fun. I especially enjoy this line “The first peeps of Spring color in yellow blooms

    no longer seem to exist”

  2. I really like your post…love the pictures from your window…somehow, here in Chicago, we didn’t get the winter storm expected… today I see the sun and , no snow, may be some rain later on… but as you know, in Chicago we can have 50 degrees and tomorrow 15… but for right now, let me just enjoy the sun !

  3. The comparison to The Wizard of Oz is fantastic – and the way going home is monochrome and beautiful. In your poem, I notice how you only have one point of color – and even that is buried. And the photos are very pretty!
