Waking to a Bird Song Sonata- Day 29 SOLSC

Over the past few mornings, as I am rolling between sleep and awakening, my ears have been filled with the songs of birds. It is a musical call to bring my mind consciously into the new day.

As my eyes flutter a few times before fully opening, I hear one bird calling out and another answering quickly in return. To me it seems like one is saying “Good Morning!” and the other politely responds with its tweet of “Good Morning”.

Deciding to just lie in bed for a few more moments, a full sonata whispers through the air. The low bass caw of the crow, the mumble chirr of the robin and the two-parted whistle of the cardinal mingle and mix to create a melodious morning soundtrack.

Their energy to sing in the new day is positive and contagious. It makes me want to bob up and look out the window to see what they are singing about. Well, the birds have been right. As I open my curtains and peer out, the colors of dawn are gracing the sky.

I am very grateful for these days when my time to rise matches with those of the natural world. This was starting to happen before the time change and then I was plunged back into dark mornings and rising to my alarm clock. For this week, I have been called to each new day by the natural world and it is such a pleasant beginning. I will cherish each morning this happens. It won’t be for long as sunrise will move earlier and earlier and my time to arise remains the same.

Thank you birds in my neighborhood for your wonderful call to awakeness. You are so much better than any alarm clock!

  1. I also enjoy hearing the birds in the morning. I always feel like they are making their plans for the day and sharing them with each other. Their song is so much better than the buzz of an alarm clock.

  2. Melodious morning soundtracks are so much better than alarm clocks. Although I do wish they would set themselves to our wake-up time. It gets harder when they wake me up before I want to get up.

  3. I do love waking to the sounds of the birds, but I am also thankful I sleep at the front of the house and not the back. The volume bird songs in the backyard could wake the dead!
