This morning I left early on a drive to my hometown for a Celebration of Life. The gray blanket of sky was a reflection of my mood- sad, tired, blah and a bit moody. I was staring at varying shades of gray for about 45 minutes and it was draining me, pulling me lower than I already was.
As I rounded a curve, there was the slightest crack branching through the gray- a thread-sized wisp of blue. It wasn’t large at all. It wasn’t vibrant either. But, oh did I notice it! Viewing that little break of blue brought a smile. The pale blue popped because it was surrounded by gray. It made me pause and think about how the sad times help us appreciate and treasure the bright times.
Continuing on my route, during an opening in the trees, that fragile line of blue widened into the shape of an eye. It was an intense blue stare. Immediately, I felt a change. My mood perked. This energetic sky was pulsating its spirit to me. I sat up trying to keep that blue in my vision as long as possible. But eventually, the blue lessened until all that was left to see was gray again.
It didn’t matter that the last 20 minutes was a gray sky again. The blue opened my mind to the beauty of the moment and reminded me to look for the little joys in life.
As I pulled into the parking lot, my mood had lifted and I thought I could honestly celebrate my aunt’s life- thinking over the little joys she brought to others. Plus, everyone was wearing her favorite color- purple! More vibrancy amidst the dark.

I love how you captured the colors of the sky, personified it, and compared it to the emotions of your day. What a beautiful joy. (I also attended a aunt’s celebration of life yesterday.)

Oh, I love how you showed the effect nature has on our moods. My favorite line, ‘a thread size wisp of blue’ is all it took to begin changing your mood. I love that you are celebrating your aunt’s joys in life.

Oh, what a blue sky can do! I have watched a particular spot in the sky while driving just like you did. I wanted to keep it with me, but you are correct – just the glimpse can change a mindset. Lovely slice about the impact of nature.

Thank you Heather! I wish the sky was blue today too but only gray, gray, gray.

I was in the parking lot at the grocery store when I looked up yesterday and saw a sliver of blue. It was almost a robin’s egg blue. I, too, was grateful. I’m sorry for your loss, Cathy.
